Lovin’ on Nature

July 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Been in Cedar Breaks past two weeks, about 10,000 feet high, working on taking down this old wire fence (for keeping out the sheep) and putting up a new one. Not bad work, got some lovely callouses on my fingers and a sore back, but not bad work. I enjoyed the crew immensely, for the most part a bunch of easy-going folks. a bit quieter than my last group, a bunch of tobacco-chewing obsenity-shouting guys (not that they weren’t fun in own way).

Here is the view from Chessmen peak:

And I guess I have to relate the story of “Crazy Man.” This guy parked his car in a campsite across from us and by everyone’s account seemed genuinely crazy. Maybe schizophrenic, OCD, terrets all together. He’d be constantly talking to himself and even yelling, walking around with an egg beater and newspaper clippings, and gnashing his teeth. Two of the crew member guys kept sentinel overnight to keep an eye on him. I was slightly paranoid because just a few nights before I’d had a dream that a mentally handicapped man attacked me with an axe. And so I thought it was bad mojo that one of our guys had found a hatchet in the woods and left it about 5 feet from my tent. So I hid it in the bushes, and enjoyed a minimally interrupted sleep.

Also, our minibus broke down on the way there.
Speaking of which I need to find out if my car is done being fixed at the shop.

Here’s the view from our campsite during sunset. It was SO amazing to watch the full moon rise, all bright and yellow (not pictured).
